A happy child engaged in play-based learning at a preschool in Carytown, Richmond.

Play-Based Preschool in Carytown

Our play-based preschool in Carytown is a close-knit community where every child is celebrated and every family is known. Serving children from 16 months to 5 years, we offer small class sizes capped at six students for personalized attention and meaningful connections.

Like a modern-day Sesame Street, we embrace diversity and inclusivity, creating a welcoming environment for every child. Our multi-age classrooms encourage collaboration and peer learning, allowing children of different ages to learn from and support each other. This Montessori-inspired approach fosters social development, empathy, and leadership skills, nurturing a community where every child thrives

We enrich our curriculum with field trips to explore the local neighborhood, including Grayland Tot Lot Park, the Belmont Branch of the Richmond Public Library, the local post office, and more. These outings provide real-world learning experiences, helping children connect with their surroundings and fostering a sense of belonging and discovery.

Hummingbirds

(+16 months & 2 years olds)

At our preschool, we help toddlers grow and learn in a caring and playful environment. Your little Hummingbird will go from walking to running and climbing. We focus on fine motor skills like holding small objects, scribbling, and stacking blocks. Our hands-on activities help with cognitive growth, teaching lessons like object permanence and cause and effect. We encourage language development and counting through fingerplays and songs. Socially and emotionally, we support each child’s growing independence, guiding them in early social play and teaching them about emotions. They'll begin to learn how to transition and follow their teacher through a daily schedule.  With a maximum class size of 4, your toddler will feel safe and supported as they explore and discover. And when you’re ready for potty training, just let us know. We're here to help!

Bluebirds Class

(2 & 3 year olds)

In our Bluebirds class, we create a nurturing environment where children thrive. This stage is all about curiosity and budding independence. We focus on developing social-emotional skills, encouraging children to express their feelings, build friendships, and practice cooperation. Language development is key, so we incorporate storytelling, songs, and conversations that expand vocabulary and communication skills. Through hands-on activities, we introduce basic concepts like colors, shapes, and numbers, encouraging problem-solving and critical thinking.

Physical development is also prioritized, with opportunities to develop gross motor skills through play and fine motor skills through creative projects. Our experienced teachers provide gentle guidance, helping each child feel confident as they take on new challenges and learn at their own pace. With a maximum class size of 5, each child receives personalized attention and support. In the Bluebirds class, learning is always playful and engaging, laying a strong foundation for their educational journey.

Owls (3, 4, and 5 year olds)

Your preschooler is excited to learn, and we’re excited to teach! At The Village, our Preschool program aligns with Virginia’s Early Learning Standards, nurturing each child’s development through engaging activities. Our Owls begin pre-academic learning with a strong emphasis on hands-on experiences. We focus on social-emotional growth, teaching children to share, take turns, and build positive relationships. Language development is supported through storytelling, songs, and conversations that enhance vocabulary and listening skills.

Our curriculum promotes cognitive development with activities that encourage problem-solving, sorting, and letter and number recognition. Physical growth is fostered through structured and unstructured play, with creative projects refining fine motor skills. We connect students with their community through regular outings to local museums, restaurants, and shops, offering real-world experiences. With a maximum class size of 6, we ensure each child feels supported and encouraged as they explore and discover. At The Village, learning is fun and joyful.
